I feel like it’s been interesting playing a little with the definitions of what’s “important”, what “matters”, etc – on the one hand, Ultimates is about literally everything that has ever been in the Marvel Universe, but at the same time it’s not about Iron Man. And I’m allowed to wander off and grow this cosmic garden and make wonderful things out of it because I can do that without stepping on too many toes. We’re operating on such a big scale that it’s almost like when particle physicists reveal that actually the universe is a hologram and all the information of our lives is encoded on the outer walls of spacetime, or whatever it is this week. It’s great, and it blows your mind, and it’s wonderful to know that human beings are able to come together and explore this territory… but it doesn’t pay your bills or fix your car, at least not in a way you can immediately see. So, yeah, we now have an idea that Marvel’s multiversal history is much bigger and broader than we thought – but at the same time, that’s not likely to pop up in a Daredevil story. -- Al Ewing

"The setup of the story is that California is forced to secede when it takes a principled stance to be a Sanctuary State after the President orders all immigrants be deported. So the starting point of the whole story is people doing the right thing and standing up to tyranny. The fact that the tyrants bring the hammer down in response is to be expected, but people’s resilience in fighting back should be inspiring. The book isn’t about wallowing in dystopia, it’s about celebrating the spirit of resistance."

This week Generations: The Unworthy Thor & The Mighty Thor came out. If you like Jason Aaron's Thor run (which stretches back to November 2012*) then Jason Aaron's enerations: The Unworthy Thor & The Mighty Thor is another issue of Jason Aaron's Thor. I enjoyed it immensely.

Unfortunately, the labelling makes it slightly confusing as to who actually appears.

While there is no doubt as to who is the Mighty Thor, the Unworthy Thor isn't who might first come to mind. A better term might be the Pre-Worthy Thor who has not yet proved himself worthy of wielding a Mjolnir, rather than the Post-Worthy Thor with the Uru arm, who lost Mjolnir and took up Jarnbjorn because Nick Fury whispered to him on the moon.

Generations is a decent self-contained story (but with a shoe-horned in epilogue that does nothing for me) about why a Thor needs Midgard and what it means to be a God and when Thor first met Thor )

It didn't do so for the physical world with its main character, who was hunting a killer in the Cloud World of the AIs.

It did so for the physical world with two of the supporting characters.

One was a detective working the case of the robot that'd killed.

The other programmed that kind of robot.

Their conversation turned to development. )

So I guess this being labeled a Two-Face story is a bit of a spoiler but then again the title isn't exactly a subtle one. In addition to the expected character moments I also chose this story for how it depicts Bruce Wayne.

In the comments to these weekly posts (and only these posts), it's your chance to go as off topic as you like. Talk about non-comics stuff, thread derail, and just generally chat amongst yourselves.

The apparent perpetrator of the carnage in Barcelona last week has been shot dead.

Steve Bannon departed the White House... I assume someone accidentally broke the chalk pentagram. He now intends to rejoin Breitbart and attack anyone in the current administration he feels isn't right wing enough. The gift that keeps on giving.

P45 has decreed that despite lambasting the previous administration for years over remaining in Afghanistan and campaigning on the principle of withdrawal that no, things are actually a little more complicated than he thought, and he's sending more troops in. That should have some interesting repercussions on his voterbase.

Courts in India have outlawed the Islamic "Triple talq" form of divorce, which allows a man to divorce his wife instantly by repeating the word Talaq "Divorce" three times, either in person, or even by text.

The decision to silence London's Big Ben in the Houses of Parliament for four years whilst essential maintenance takes place has caused a frankly ludicrous amount of Press over here. "The Luftwaffe didn't silence it" "Health and Safety gone mad" etc. etc. It WILL ring on Remembrance Day, and New Years Eve which, if we're honest, were usually the only time non-Londoners listened to it with any actual interest.

Well, the USA had view of a total eclipse, and since no one thought to reunite the missing shard with the Dark Crystal, things are trundling on regardless, and Trump didn't merge with a wise old hippy to become an enlightened superbeing. Better luck next time on that one.

The new series of "The Great British Bake Off" is imminent for those who follow such things.

It's rumoured that Bradley Walsh will be Jodie Whittaker's companion in Doctor Who... which given that Mr Walsh (best known as a gameshow host and light entertainer, but also a character actor) is 57, will make for a rather unusual double act in the TARDIS.

The UK lost Bruce Forsythe, TV entertainer, showman, presenter, and general national treasure for over 75 years, at age 89 and the US lost Jerry Lewis at age 91.

The world also lost science fiction great Brian Aldiss.

Slightly on topic, but the last episode of "The Lightning and the Storm", the podcast about Walt Simonson's seminal Thor run, has an interview with Mr Simonson himself, which is fascinating.

We always need new superheroes. But actual new ones, reflecting the modern day, rather than reflecting yesterday. Unless reflecting yesterday is the point of the story. But the idea that we don’t need new superheroes is like not needing new romances or new detectives. The moment you don’t need new characters in genre stories, the genre is as dead as Latin. It’s not a crime that superheroes don’t age, but it’s a problem that superhero series don’t more often age and die and get replaced. Imagine if Kinsey Millhone and V.I. Warshawski and other modern (well, relatively) PIs couldn’t get an audience because Sam Spade and Race Williams were taking up all the shelf space. If you’re writing X-Men and your metaphors are about Martin Luther King and Malcolm X, that’s not all that much more modern than if your metaphors are about the Red Scare and McCarthyism. Ask yourself new questions, and put the results in your stories. Steve Englehart juiced up Captain America by asking what Captain America meant to the early 1970s. What does he mean now? What does Superman represent to the world? How does that, whatever it is, fit into the world today? Same for Batman, same for Wonder Woman. Tell stories you couldn’t tell ten, twenty, fifty years ago. -- Kurt Busiek

Once upon a time, DC comics understood that comics don't have to be always serious grimdark heavy drama involving lots of gratuitous violence and rape. That was a good thing, but the less serious comics that DC put out weren't always worthwhile. Today it seemed appropriate to post 8/23 pages from issue 117 of the mercifully forgotten "The Adventures of Jerry Lewis" comic, an issue worthy of note today only because it guest starred Wonder Woman in her "mod" phase.

JerryLewis_117_00

gratuitous sexism and unfunny jokes ahoy )

The past was a different country, one in which it was possible for there to be over 100 issues of a Jerry Lewis comic.

ETA: the last page includes a statement of management and circulation. in 1970, "The Adventures of Jerry Lewis" was selling 175,000 copies every month. Do you think maybe, just maybe, going after ever more grimdark crossover events might have been a mistake on DC's part?

Giving this the crack tag, I guess? And the misogyny tag, because Jerry Lewis.

I love the mystery of this secret. It might be a cantankerous response to the previous postcard. The next mega-exhibition at the American Visionary Art Museum will be “The Great Mystery Show”. Several dozen mysterious PostSecrets will be included when it opens, however, this week is your last chance to see the current exhibit and secrets.  If you have never been to the AVAM it is so worth a road-trip.

Dear Frank-
My family and
I came across a picture that was hidden in my Great-Grandfathers wallet. He passed away 9 years ago. He was a solider in the Korean War and retired from the service after 20 years. The lady in the picture is not my Great- Grandmother to whom he was married to for 57 years. It has also come to light in the recent weeks, that he may have fathered a child while he was stationed in Fort Irwin.

My family and  I are not sure if the woman in the picture is of his supposed child. However, there is a cryptic message written on the back of the photo that none of us can out how to go about translating it. We are unaware what language it is written in. My best friend told me to seek your help in finding out what the message is. I really hope you can help us!

"Avatar: The Last Airbender" and it's sequel "The Legend of Korra" featured some of the best worldbuilding of any cartoon series I've ever seen. The various societies were rich, and complex, and they included their resident elemental powers with creativity and practicality.

One area the cartoon did not expand on was how certain social matters were addressed, and the Korra finale, which showed Korra joining hands with Asami Sato, the woman she loves, as they step into the Spirit World, was positively subversive in showing a blossoming same sex relationship.

The other's a man, the Scavenger.

Last month's issue #2 ended on the latter.

But I also genuinely believe that it’s been a really rough year for everybody, regardless of what political side you’re on. It’s a rough time. People are angry at each other. There’s a lot of divisiveness and terror out there about what’s going to happen, and from all corners. Metal is a story that’s about things that keep me and Greg up. It’s about the ways in which you can find yourself in a story that you didn’t think was possible, and it’s much darker than the one that you thought was inevitable." - Scott Snyder
